Mistakes to Avoid When Hiring a Remodeling Contractor in Laguna Niguel, CA

With several years of experience remodeling kitchens and bathrooms, we've learned of some common mistakes from our customers.  We've compiled a list of top 5 mistakes when looking for the your kitchen and bathroom remodeling contractor.

  • Not looking at a contractor's past projects

Understanding the track record and history of a contractor is one of the best ways to assess how qualified they are in performing the job.  Home remodeling, especially in Orange County, is a huge financial commitment, so it would be wise to make sure you find a qualified contractor before awarding the job to someone.  Spending big money on an incompetent contractor is a terrible situation, as you will likely have to shell out even more money to undo or correct the work that was done.  We believe that contractors that have invested in having space for showrooms are serious about showcasing their work and tend to be more credible.

  • Not getting testimonials from past clients

Any successful home renovations contractor will have happy clients that would be willing to share their experience in working with them.  When interviewing contractors during the initial consultation, ask for contact information from past clients.  Speaking to past customers will help you gauge how easy it was to work with this contractor and their team and how well they were taken care of.

  • Using price as the only factor

It's important to remember that price isn't always a good indicator of quality, which is why we recommend feeling this out in the above 2 tips. In some cases, lower-priced contractors may offer subpar service or products, and while it may appear to be saving your money, there is a risk of ending up with an unhappy customer and having to pay more money to fix any mistakes for an unqualified contractor.  A frequent situation that we hear of is contractors intentionally bidding low to be awarded a job, only to continue "discovering" new unforeseen challenges that will add to the cost.  And since they have already started the work, the homeowner has no choice but to continue with this contractor, otherwise it will be a major headache trying to find someone else for an incomplete job.  Make sure that the quote is clear as to what's included and making sure it is understood what costs would potentially change if the material or scope differs from what was initially agreed upon.

  • 100% payment before starting

Beware of any contractor that requests for 100% of the payment up front.  It's quite a disappointment how often we hear of contractors that collect payment and end up going MIA before finishing the job. A reputable contractor would ensure any problems are resolved before ending the project and collecting final payment.

  • Long project schedule times

A good indicator of how efficient a contractor is will be the length of time for the project.  While a contractor may check all the boxes above, they may not have an extensive crew to get the job done in a timely manner.  What may take one company a few weeks, can take another a few months, depending on complexity of the job. Comparing schedules of multiple contractors will help you gauge what a realistic timeline should be to finish yours. Any major outliers should be reviewed extra carefully to determine what is causing the difference in timeline versus other proposals.  Are they taking on other jobs at the same time as yours? Is the crew assigned to the job smaller or less experienced with a specific task? These are definitely some questions to consider when deciding to hire a remodeling contractor.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  • Can I remodel my home myself?

Yes, you could do it yourself, but if the scope of the project is fairly large and you don't have the experience or knowledge, we wouldn't recommend it.  There are several safety precautions that need to be taken as there are many dangerous materials out there.  This work requires use of heavy materials, sharp tools, and even knowledge of electrical wiring, which can result in injuries that could be fatal if you don't know what you're doing.

Our best recommendation is to leave it to the professionals!

  • How do I select the right remodeling contractor?

As a first, make sure to check the contractor's past work and portfolio.  If you like what you see, call them to see if you can get a quote on your project.

In the quoting process, there will be a lot of information gathering from both you and the contractor.  This will be the best time to get a feel for how well you guys are able to communicate with and trust each other, which will be an important aspect throughout the course of the project.  If it's difficult to get on the same page at this stage, it may be a sign of harder times ahead.

Another factor to consider would be the selection of materials.  Check to see if they have a showroom or a way for you to evaluate the different options for cabinets, countertops, flooring, etc.

And of course, pricing will be a big factor to determine affordability, and if they offer financing, an even bigger plus to help make paying for this even easier.

Lastly, you will want to see what kind of warranty options a contractor offers.  If they will honor any repairs or fixes for anything that goes wrong from an improper installation.

  • Do you offer any guarantees or warranties on your work?

Yes! We are so confident in our work that we offer lifetime warranties for your peace of mind.  Our customers' satisfaction is our number one priority, which is why we want to make sure our customers are happy with the project.

  • How much does a home remodel cost?

Due to the nature of different scopes in each home remodel project, costs will vary from each renovation.  Location, size of space, material selection and availability, complexity of installation are all contributing factors to the price.

  • Do you offer financing options?

Yes, we understand that many homeowners have their money tied up in other assets, such as stocks, mutual funds, real estate, or other investments and don't want to liquidate them into cash for a home remodeling project.

For qualified indviduals with good credit, we are proud to offer 12-month no-interest financing.

  • What's the difference between cabinet refacing and replacing?

While many people initially believe that a new look requires cabinet replacements, cabinet refacing may be a better option for those that want to maintain the same cabinet layout, have their cabinet frames still in tact, and want to keep cost to a minimum.

Not only do we sell complete cabinet replacements, but we also offer cabinet refacing to those that are qualified for it.  Cabinet refacing can be just as effective as replacements - it gives your cabinets a completely new look, without breaking the bank.
